I don't know what I admire most about the photographer - that he got the dog to sit so well for the camera or that he could balance a child of that age on the stump so well - and the fact that he got a good shot of them both together.

Yes, it's a virtuoso performance, jar. Have a look at this tintype for another fine early dog shot - everything perfectly still, except for the slightly vibrating tongue...

From the looks of the dog's owner, and that stiff arm of his, I'd say he has a VERY powerful hold on the back of this dog's neck -- and probably a not-too-sweet history of how to control an animal. Not a pretty picture, but a nice dog.
